Magic School Bus Guided Tour: Animals

Magic School Bus Guided Tour: Insects

The Five Kingdoms of Life --If you are pointing out to your students that living things fit into classifications according to their characteristics (and you like having fun with masks!) then this may be of interest…

Plants

The Great Plant Escape --Help Detective LePlant and his partners Bud and Sprout unlock the amazing mysteries of plant life.

Helping Plants Grow Well

Green Apples --Classroom activities help students understand the effect of light on the growth of seeds and plants.

Growing Plants with Sparky --Identify different parts of a plant, what seeds need to grow, and the stages of a plant's life cycle.

Growing Plants With Sparky 2 --These activities will help you to identify different parts of a plant and to learn about a plant's life cycle.

Plants --Interdependence and adaptation: plants needs and parts. You will learn about different parts of a plant and what it needs to survive.

Sun and Stars

National Aeronautics & Space Administration for Kids - NASA KIDS offers a fun way for children to learn about NASA's activities and science, using interactive tools and kid-attractive pages.

Star Light, Star Bright --In this lesson, students will identify the different properties of waves and the relationship that exists between energy, wavelength, and frequency. Students will correlate images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and other astronomical instruments to the wavelength, color, and temperature information that can be found in the spectrum.

Hubble Deep Field Academy-- Join Professor WifPic in examining the Hubble Deep Field image and simulate the process astronomers have gone through to count, classify, and identify objects in the image as well as estimate their distances from Earth.

Pictures in the Sky - Discover the constellations, learn how to identify them, and find out what mysterious objects can be found within their borders.

Sky Gallery - The best way to appreciate the sky is to see if for yourself. In the Sky Gallery you'll find some of the greatest pictures from space.

Sky Games - If you're in the mood to play a game, you can find a variety of free ocean and sea-themed games here. There are word games and puzzles, and even a few with an arcade feel.

The Life of the Sun --Animate the Sun! Since its birth 4.5 billion years ago, the Sun has grown slowly larger and brighter with each four Hydrogen nuclei that it fuses into Helium. Billions of years from now, it will swell into a red giant and engulf the inner planets. Using up the last of its nuclear fuel, the Sun will finally collapse into an Earth-sized white dwarf.

Star Race --Which stars burn though their fuel fastest? Enter stars of different masses into the Pan-Galactic Star Race and find out!

Arty the Astronaut - Take off for fun and adventure with Arty, the part-time astronaut. Nice animation guides you through this site as you learn about our solar system, and play online games and activities. Includes a printable teacher's guide for use at home or in the classroom.

Kids Astronomy -On this site you can explore the solar system, venture into deep space, join a virtual space exploration, find out how big the universe is, read the latest astronomy news and enjoy some fun astronomy activities. There is also a resource section with a dictionary of astronomy terms and an ask the expert page.

Windows to the Universe--really cool site!

Virtual Starship --StarView enables you to take a fantasy flight among the stars in the Sun's immediate neighborhood.  It will tell you what the Sun looks like from Sirius and Altair.

How Big Are the Earth, Sun, and Moon? --These activities will help students understand where the sun is in the solar system and how big the earth, moon, and sun are.

Is It Hot in the Light? --In this activity, students will make observations that things in direct sunlight are warmer than things that are not in as much sunlight. Also, they may notice that there may be more heat near asphalt, brick, or cement because heat can be stored and radiated from these, also.

It's Hot --Classroom activities help students understand the effect of sunlight on the Earth.

Properties of Matter

Heating Up!

Here Comes the Sun --This activity will have students predict, measure and record temperatures.

It's a Weighty Matter --This activity will help students understand weight, mass and gravity.

Sun or Shade? --Students will use a thermometer to measure the air temperature in several places around the school and then return to the classroom to graph the data. In addition, students will grow 3 plants in different sunlight and record the growth.

Classify Forces

Little Orange Rooster --Classroom activities help students understand that heat energy can be produced by mechanical and electrical machines.

Flicking With Force --Balls of varying weights are used to discover the results of force applied to an object.

Hot Stuff --This activity will have students predict, measure and record temperatures.

May The Best Force Win --Sports activity stations will help the student observe and understand that the greater the force applied to an object, the greater the change in speed or direction of the object.

Sunlight Necklaces --Students will create living necklaces to explore the power of sunlight.

I'm Falling For You --In this activity, students will experience gravity just like Galileo did during his experiments.

Jump --This activity has students jump with and without weights. Their data should reveal that gravity has more of a pulling force with heavy objects that are on the ground than light objects on the ground.

Draggin' Me Down --Students will discover that gravity effects objects that they roll up a ramp.

Heat From Machines --Classroom activities help students understand that heat energy can be produced by mechanical and electrical machines.

Rubbing Objects Together --Classroom activities help students understand that heat may be produced when objects are rubbed together.

The Force of Gravity -- The activities in this lesson will allow students to observe and analyze the forces of gravity.

Things Are Heating Up --The activities in this lesson will allow students to observe and analyze the forces of gravity.

Weighing In --This is an hands on investigation that demonstrates what happens when a force is applied to an object.

SoundCheck -- Explore how it works, try a few noisy activities, and even create your own tracks with the online sound sampler.

Night and Day -- Don’t be kept in the dark any longer…

Reflect on This -- Do you get the picture? If not, take some time to reflect.

Mind-Bending Refraction -- Create a spectacular but simple illusion using water and light trickery.

Doing the Splits! -- Get a sneak preview of what light is made up of.

All Together Now -- So you’ve split light, now put it back together again!
